Box Beats Blogs

Author: Shaunk...

I read an article recently in .net. It gives the results of a study made my Ketchum/University of Southern California into Media Myths. The results showed that despite what bloggers & podcasters would have you believe the general public still rely on conventional media.

The results showed:
TV is used by 73.6%
Newspapers are used by 68.9%
News websites are used by 38.1%
Blogs, videocasts & podcasts are used by only 13.4%, 5.6% & 4.8% repectivly

The popularity of blogs and social networks also varies with geography, used more by residents of big cities than by people who live in more remote areas.

In terms of selling products and services you still can't beat word of mouth with the majority of consumers relying on recommendations from people they actually know rather than advertisements in papers or on blogs.

I found these results interesting. As a regular computer & internet user it is easy to think this is the norm however there is a large number of people who do not use computers, have no interest in the developing technologies and still rely on traditional media. This is not only true for the field of media, I personally think cheques are outdated and inefficient, I have only written a couple in my entire life but some people still use them regularly. Just goes to show we can't judge a situation or the consumers preferences based solely on our own opinions.
