Invoking an Emotional Response

Author: Shaunk...

I posted recently about mind tricks, and the way the short & long term memories function. As the long term memory stores information in a visual context I realised this is something very important to consider when designing. More so, I suppose when designing for advertisement purposes but any website, poster, work of art etc. you produce surely you would want people to remember it? Well if the long term memory stores vivid images best then for someone to remember what they see clearly they must have some kind of emotional attachment to the work. The most obvious one would be beauty but in a society where design is woven into most aspects of life I could see this been easily overlooked. I would say the second most memorable visuals would be the unusual as this appeals to the inquisitive side of human nature, if you catch a glance of something which your subconscious cannot process you feel compelled to take a second glance and give it more thought. Following these or possibly on a par would be images that stir up strong feelings like pity/sorrow, humor, disgust, lust/desire, affection (or whatever emotion it is when you find something cute) or even anger.
