Seeing Music
Author: Shaunk...
I went to Verve on Sunday evening as my friends brother was playing, it's a night called the Sunday Session. There were 3 groups on, all very different but all really talented. Anyway the point of this blog is that a book I'm reading at the moment teaches memory techniques most of which involve visualization techniques. As a bit of an experiment I wondered if the technique could be applied to music? While listening to the first act (a slightly hippyish girl) I zoned out a little, focused on the words and gave it a go, it actually worked pretty well.
The process works by turning words into vivid images which are processed and remembered easier by the brain. So if the song is about peace you can easily drum up images of things you associate with peace and as you string your images together, voila you have a music video in your head.
And why is this relevant? Well it occurred to me that this technique resembles the creative process where a designer needs to generate the original concepts and ideas. Linking words to images.
