I went to this event as the The Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre last night.

Over all I didn't really learn anything directly from the presentation, it was more aimed at people setting up or running their own businesses. The presenter worked for a Web Design agency in Doncaster but was more involved with the business/clients/marketing than the design or coding. The seminar covered all the basics, jargon and outlined how to set up a free site using Google along with advising which tools may be useful and how to get ranked better. The most interesting part of the presentation for me was getting to hear from a professional giving the rundown of various websites, justifying why some cost £50 and others cost £50,000. There were some interesting points made regarding usability, testing and SEO which were good to hear from a voice of experience however I did notice he was out of date as far as SEO and Flash content was concerned.

Indirectly however it was much more valuable. I got to see my target audience, get a better idea of how they think, what they care about and where they most commonly need help. I did also get approached by one of the gents there wanting to discuss some work, it may be a little PHP heavy for me at the moment but I have still arranged to catch up anyway and go over the project with him in more details.
