Print Production Reading
Author: Shaunk...
I have recently been working on some fliers & business cards for a friends new business. This highlighted many small issues and holes in my knowledge regarding print based media. In the past I have concentrated on producing work for screen and although I recognised some terms I didn't really know what they meant or how to properly create the artwork in Photoshop and Illustrator. 2 colour, full colour, spot colour, pantone hexachrome, duotone, halftone, registration, separation, bleed etc. There are a lot more things to consider then I had originally anticipated and these also seem to vary slightly with printers, I also experienced some issues with colour due to the variants between monitors, platforms and CMYK/RGB.
I resolved most of these issues though a mix of on-line tutorials, questioning people with more experience and reading books. I skimmed Production for Graphic Designers (Fourth Edition) for some insight. It gives good overall insight into printing processes, hardware and the terminology however doesn't really delve into the technical side of how to create files.
